What to buy when food shopping

Decide what you will cook this week before you write the list. For each dinner, buy one protein, one or two vegetables and one starch, such as rice, pasta, potatoes or bread. Add what you eat for breakfast, lunch and snacks. Check the fridge and the cupboards, then fill the gaps from the list above.

For ideas meal by meal, read what to buy when grocery shopping .

Weekly shopping list for one

  • Buy fruit and veg loose, so you can take two carrots instead of a 1 kg bag.
  • Choose two proteins and cook each one twice. Sunday's roast chicken can go in Monday's wraps.
  • Freeze half the loaf and half the meat on the day you shop. Sliced bread toasts straight from the freezer.
  • Frozen veg and berries let you cook small portions without waste.

Weekly shopping list for a family

Plan five or six dinners and leave one night for leftovers. Then:

  • Buy larger packs of mince or chicken and split them into meal-size bags before you freeze them.
  • Buy the things everyone eats every day in large packs: milk, bread, eggs, fruit and cereal.
  • Keep one list that everyone can add to, on the fridge or in a shared app.

How much to buy for one week

These are rough amounts for a week of mostly home-cooked meals. After the first week, look at what is left in the fridge and adjust.

Item1 personFamily of 4
Eggs6 to 1218 to 24
Milk2 to 4 pints8 to 12 pints
Bread1 loaf2 to 3 loaves
Fruit10 to 14 pieces35 to 45 pieces
Vegetables1.5 to 2 kg4.5 to 6 kg
Meat or fish700 g to 1 kg2.5 to 3 kg
Rice or pasta500 g1 to 1.5 kg

How to keep your food shop on budget

  • Plan the meals before you shop. "The #1 tip for stretching our grocery money is to make a list of meals and snacks for the week before going to the store," says the University of Maryland Extension [1] .
  • Compare unit prices. The shelf label shows a unit price, such as the price per kg or per litre, so you can see which size is cheaper.
  • Buy own-brand staples such as flour, rice, tinned tomatoes and milk [2] .
  • Cook some dinners with beans or lentils. They cost less per serving than meat [2] .
  • Buy fruit and veg in season, and keep frozen ones as a cheap backup.
  • Cook one dinner from what is already in the fridge. Type those ingredients into the free leftovers recipe generator and it suggests recipes that use them.

Turn your meal plan into a shopping list with MenuMagic

The essentials above cover what you buy every week. The rest comes from the recipes you cook. In MenuMagic you plan the week, then in the shopping list you tap Generate list. Every ingredient of the week's recipes goes into one list with quantities, sorted by aisle. The list is shared with everyone in your household, so whoever is at the supermarket sees what is left to buy.

Meal names in the plan, and a shopping list you fill in yourself, are free. Full recipes and the automatic list from your plan, sorted by aisle, need Premium. For the step-by-step method, read how to make a shopping list from your meal plan .
